Closing Report bauma 2010
• Visitor quality good despite fewer visitors from overseas as a result of the temporary closure of European airspace
• Record exhibition space and record number of exhibitors
• Over 415,000 visitors from more than 200 countries
bauma 2010 has marked a turnaround in the international construction machinery industry, ushering in the hoped-for change in sentiment. And this was despite the ban on air travel which impacted on the first few days of the fair.
"The mood in the industry shows that in Europe the bottom of the cycle is now behind us. Confidence has returned. Of course at the start of the fair the exhibitors felt the lack of many customers from Asia and America – but in the second half of bauma, this improved considerably. Messe München´s crisis management in the days impacted by volcanic ash was outstanding." This is how Ralf Wezel, Secretary-General of CECE, the Committee for European Construction Equipment, summed up this year´s bauma. In doing so, he confirmed the expectations of the sector as outlined by Dr Christof Kemmann, Chairman of the VDMA Construction Equipment and Building Materials Machinery Industry Association, at the Main Press Conference for bauma 2010 on the first day of the fair.
Although the ban on air travel in Europe prevented visitors and in the end around 50 exhibitors from overseas from coming to the fair, the mood at the venue among the approximately 3,150 registered exhibitors from 53 countries was good by the close of the fair. Already by the mid-way point of the fair a number of exhibitors were reporting more sales than they had expected. "The good old times are coming back: the figures for sales taken at the fair far exceed our expectations. We reckon we will be able to match the volume we took at the record bauma in 2007. This is a clear signal that at Zeppelin-Cat, too, business is moving forward again after the difficult year of 2009," confirmed Michael Heidemann, Managing Director of Zeppelin and CEO of Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH, Germany. Michikazu Okada, Vice-President of Hitachi Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane Co., Ltd., Japan: " We had a lot of new business opportunities some of which already resulted in unexpected conclusions of sale."
The representative survey of exhibitors conducted by TNS Infratest shows that bauma 2010, as the leading world fair, is marking a change in mood following a year of crisis in 2009, and that this change is being felt in many international markets, with few exceptions. Almost half the exhibitors are expecting the economic situation to improve.
Even before the fair started, it was evident that worldwide the sector had high hopes of the leading world fair in Munich: with 555,000 square metres of space, all fully booked, and 60 percent of the exhibitors coming from outside Germany, the fair registered new all-time highs for the overall number of exhibitors, international participation and space booked. From China, India and Turkey in particular exhibitor numbers were up strongly on the previous event. "bauma is the Mecca for construction equipment. Though the volcano shaded Europe it is fascinating to see so many visitors from all over the world here," said Cuneyt Divris, President of the Imder, Construction Equipment Distributors & Manufacturers Association of Turkey.
Nevertheless, the general economic situation ahead of bauma and the unexpected ban on air travel at the start of the fair did impact on the final figures for visitor numbers: Over 415,000 visitors from more than 200 countries attended bauma 2010. In comparison to bauma 2007, this was 17 percent fewer. 65 percent of the visitors came from Germany, 35 percent travelled from countries outside Germany. "Despite the many emergency measures implemented by Messe München, in cooperation with its employees in Munich and the international sales and association partners, in the second half of the running time – which sees more visitors – not all of the expected visitors from Asia, India and America were able to get to the leading world fair bauma in Munich. However, because of the turnaround which bauma 2010 has ushered in for the sector worldwide, we are looking forward optimistically to the already fully booked bauma China 2010 in Shanghai. Interest in the new event bC India 2011 in Mumbai, too, has led to a considerable expansion in the space originally earmarked for the event. For many of the key players who were represented at the leading world fair bauma, these events will offer international platforms in the two growth markets of China and India, and thus appeal also to the trade visitors who this time were not able to come to Munich," said Klaus Dittrich, Chairman & CEO of Messe München GmbH.
bauma 2010 has once gain lived up to its reputation as the world´s leading trade fair for the sector, in presenting a wealth of innovations: "Never before have there been so many innovations on display in terms of sustainability and environmental and human protection. Despite the economic crisis and the ash cloud, bauma remains the uncontested Number One," confirmed Dr Reinhold Festge, Managing Partner, Haver & Boecker, Germany.
Some of the events in the bauma Forum, which particularly in the first two days of bauma 2010 had included many specials about the partner country of India, had to be cancelled or re-staffed. 44 lectures and events were able to take place as scheduled from the third day onwards. The country specials in the bauma Forum are organised in cooperation with the VDMA e.V., Germany´s engineering federation, which is the conceptual sponsor of bauma.
The 30th bauma, International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, will take place as planned in three years time, from 15 to 21 April 2013 in Munich.

• Gute Besucherqualität trotz fehlender Besucher aus Übersee nach temporärem Flugverbot in Europa
• Rekordmarken bei Fläche und Ausstellerzahl
• Über 415.000 Besucher aus mehr als 200 Ländern
Die bauma 2010 markiert eine Trendwende für die internationale Baumaschinenindustrie und führt zum erhofften Stimmungsumschwung trotz des Flugverbots, das die ersten Tage das Messegeschehen beeinflusste.
„Die Stimmung zeigt, dass der Konjunktur-Tiefpunkt in Europa überwunden ist. Es gibt wieder viel Zuversicht. Natürlich fehlten den Ausstellern anfangs viele Kunden aus Asien und Amerika – in der zweiten Hälfte der Messelaufzeit wurde dies aber deutlich besser. Hervorragendes Krisenmanagement der Messe München in den Vulkanasche-Tagen“, so resümiert Ralf Wezel, Secretary General von CECE, Europäisches Baumaschinen-Komitee, den Verlauf der bauma 2010. Er bestätigt damit auch die Erwartungen der Branche, die Dr. Christof Kemmann, Vorsitzender des Fachverbandes Baumaschinen- und Baustoffmaschinen im Verband deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA) e.V. bei der Hauptpressekonferenz zur bauma 2010 am ersten Messetag skizziert hatte.
Obwohl das Flugverbot über Europa die Anreise von Besuchern und letztendlich rund 50 Ausstellern aus Übersee verhinderte, war die Stimmung bei den rund 3.150 angemeldeten Ausstellern aus 53 Ländern auf dem Messegelände zum Abschluss der Messe gut. Bereits zur Halbzeit vermeldeten einige Aussteller mehr Verkaufsabschlüsse als geplant. „Die guten alten Zeiten kommen zurück: Unsere Verkaufszahlen auf der Messe übertreffen die Erwartungen bei weitem. Nach unserer Einschätzung werden wir an das Volumen der Rekord-bauma 2007 anknüpfen können. Das ist ein deutliches Signal, dass sich Zeppelin-Cat nach dem schwierigen Jahr 2009 wieder im Aufwärtstrend befindet“, bestätigt Michael Heidemann, Geschäftsführer Zeppelin und Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH, Deutschland.

Auch die repräsentative Befragung der Aussteller von TNS-Infratest zeigt, dass die bauma 2010 als Weltleitmesse die Stimmungswende nach einem Krisenjahr 2009 markiert, das mit wenigen Ausnahmen viele internationale Märkte erfasst hatte. Nahezu die Hälfte der Aussteller erwartet eine Verbesserung der Entwicklung der wirtschaftlichen Situation in der Zukunft.
Bereits im Vorfeld der Messe hatte sich gezeigt, dass die Hoffnungen der Branche weltweit auf der Leitmesse in München liegen: mit 555.000 Quadratmetern Gesamtfläche, die komplett ausgebucht waren, und einem internationalen Ausstelleranteil von 60 Prozent, konnten neue Höchstmarken bei der Gesamtausstellerzahl, der internationalen Beteiligung und der Flächenbelegung gesetzt werden. Gerade aus China, Indien und der Türkei hatten sich die Ausstellerzahlen im Vergleich zur Vorveranstaltung stark erhöht. „Die bauma ist das Mekka für die Baumaschinenindustrie. Obwohl die Vulkanasche über Europa lag, ist es faszinierend zu sehen wie viele Besucher aus aller Welt man hier trifft“, so Cuneyt Divris, Präsident des türkischen Verbandes Imder, Construction Equipment Distributors & Manufacturers Association of Turkey.
Dennoch schlagen sich in der absoluten Besucherzahl die konjunkturelle Lage im Vorfeld der bauma und das unerwartete Flugverbot zu Messebeginn nieder: Über 415.000 Besucher aus mehr als 200 Ländern kamen zur bauma 2010. Das sind im Vergleich zur Vorveranstaltung in 2007 17 Prozent weniger. 65 Prozent der Besucher stammten aus Deutschland, 35 Prozent reisten aus Ländern außerhalb Deutschlands an. „Trotz der vielfältigen Sofortmaßnahmen, die die Messe München in Zusammenarbeit mit den Mitarbeitern in München und den internationalen Vertriebs- und Verbandspartnern ergriffen hat, konnten in der besucherstärkeren zweiten Hälfte der Laufzeit nicht mehr alle erwarteten Besucher aus Asien, Indien und Amerika zur Weltleitmesse bauma nach München kommen. Wir blicken jedoch angesichts der Trendwende, welche die bauma 2010 für die Branche weltweit eingeläutet hat, sehr optimistisch auf die bereits ausgebuchte bauma China 2010 in Shanghai. Auch das Interesse an der neuen Veranstaltung bC India 2011 in Mumbai hat dazu geführt, dass die ursprünglich geplante Fläche deutlich erweitert wird. Diese Veranstaltungen werden vielen Key Playern, die auf der Weltleitmesse bauma vertreten waren, internationale Plattformen in den beiden Wachstumsmärkten China und Indien bieten und somit auch die Fachbesucher, die dieses Mal nicht nach München kommen konnten, ansprechen“, sagt Klaus Dittrich, Vorsitzender der Messe München GmbH.
Die bauma 2010 ist ihrer Rolle als Weltleitmesse einmal mehr gerecht geworden durch die Fülle an Innovationen: „Nie waren mehr Innovationen ausgestellt, alle in Hinblick auf Nachhaltigkeit, Schutz der Umwelt und der Menschen. Die bauma ist trotz Krise und Aschewolke unangefochten die Nummer eins“, bestätigt Dr. Reinhold Festge, Geschäftsführender Gesellschafter, Haver & Boecker, Deutschland.
Die Veranstaltungen im bauma Forum, die gerade in den ersten beiden Messetagen der bauma 2010 viele Specials über das Partnerland Indien vorgesehen hatten, mussten teilweise abgesagt oder personell umbesetzt werden. 44 Vorträge und Veranstaltungen konnten ab dem dritten Messetag planmäßig stattfinden. Die Länderspecials im bauma Forum werden in Zusammenarbeit mit dem VDMA e.V., dem ideellen Träger der bauma, organisiert.
Die 30. bauma, Internationale Fachmesse für Baumaschinen, Baustoffmaschinen, Bergbaumaschinen, Baufahrzeuge und Baugeräte, wird turnusmäßig wieder in drei Jahren vom 15. bis 21. April 2013 in München stattfinden.
